Caroline is back at school after the far-too-exciting summer vacation in her hometown. After all the haunted library excitement, she’s pretty thrilled to be both alive and dating Lucas, the retired rogue and technomage. But her personal life is the only thing that came through the summer intact. Her career, on the other hand? Not so much.
Due to some string-pulling by the villain in the case she stumbled onto, she was all but thrown out of the FPAA, exiled to the file room and isolated from her colleagues. Not even Darien or Greg are calling her anymore. All she has left are Lucas, their friend Spark, and her classes. Especially now that she’s had to take on a work-study job to make up for the paychecks she’s no longer getting from the Agency.
So when the grad student teaching one of her classes falls dead mid-lecture, and the FPAA is the one who catches the case, she is frustrated beyond reason when she is firmly shut out of the investigation despite being neck-deep in it anyway. Now she has to balance sharing her boyfriend with an Agency that no longer wants her, figure out what she will do with the rest of her life, and dodge a possible serial killer on campus.
Because with a murderer on the loose, if she’s not working with the FPAA, she doesn’t have a plan. Or protection.
