Once upon a time, the gods abandoned the world.
They left without a word.
Leaving behind only crumbs for their devoted followers.
In their wake is a world that lives with the Grief of a loss so inherent it plagues every soul. But, there are still those that choose to do better. To rise up and inspire others to carry out works of righteousness and love. In the absence of the divine, mortal-kind trudges forth to leave behind a world better than they found it.
Our story, dear Listener, is not about that. Too terribly boring and sickeningly sweet.
It begins with a boy everyone agreed was better off dead.
Orphan, yes, that’s actually his name, a Cursed Born wretch in a frozen valley that that does only one of two things, ignore or revile. Spite fed his belly more often than bread and meat. A life that was supposed to end at a pyre surrounded by people cheering for his painful death. But nothing ever goes quite to plan does it?
A few explosions there.
Some imperial conquest and subjugation.
And a good old fashion coup and betrayal later and Orphan finds himself freezing to death rather than burning alive. Only to be saved again.
Then something very old and very wrong in the northern wilds offers him a question:
“Do you want to rule the world?”
From there, the Path of Tyranny opens, paved with Sins given shape, Fiendish Courts, forgotten Thrones, and a world that has no idea what it’s about to choke on.
This is the tale of the Last Tyrant, the being that conquered the world and I guess saved it too if that really matters.
If you like:
Dark, morally vicious epic fantasy
A story over 400 pages long, filled with a driven character story of a tyrant's rise to power
Villain (or at least terribly inconvenient) protagonist
Ancient powers, political claws, and magic with rules sharp enough to cut
A story in which Evil Wins
…then come sit by the fire and listen.
The world will not be saved.
But it will be interesting while it burns.
